Canon PowerShot SD1000 Digital ELPH

I've just finished (finally!) writing my review of the Canon SD1000 Digital ELPH and put up the SD1000's photo gallery as well.

New Casio and Panasonic flagship cameras

Casio and Panasonic each launched their respective "flagship" ultra-compact cameras today, and you've guessed it, that means very high resolution. We'll see how they fair in terms of image quality when we review them in the near future.


Panasonic Lumix FX100

  • 12 effective megapixels
  • 28 - 100 mm (f2.8 - f5.6) 3.6X zoom lens
  • Optical image stabilization
  • Larger sensor and more powerful flash than the other previous FX-series
  • 2.5 inch LCD
  • No manual controls
  • ISO sensitivity up to 1600 (Up to 6400 in high sensitivity mode)
  • XGA 15 FPS and 30 FPS VGA movie mode with sound
  • Takes SD/SDHC cards
  • Uses a lithium-ion battery
  • Available in July for $400


Casio Exilim Z1200

  • 12 effective megapixels
  • 37 - 111 mm (f2.8 - f5.4) 3X zoom lens
  • CCD-shift image stabilization
  • Exilim Engine 2.0 has adjusts ISO/shutter speed according to subject movement, has face detection and AF tracking
  • 2.8 inch widescreen LCD
  • Full manual controls
  • ISO sensitivity up to 1600 (Up to 6400 in high sensitivity mode)
  • 30 FPS wide VGA movie mode with sound
  • Takes SD/SDHC cards
  • Uses a lithium-ion battery
  • Available in July for $400
  • Comes in black and silver

Two new cameras from Canon

Canon updated two cameras from last year with their latest DIGIC III processor and more.


Canon PowerShot S5 IS

  • 8 effective megapixels
  • 36 - 432 mm (f2.7 - f3.5) 12X zoom lens
  • Optical image stabilization
  • DIGIC III processor
  • 2.5 inch rotating LCD
  • Full manual controls now with a hotshoe
  • 30 FPS VGA movie mode with stereo sound; 4 GB per clip limit (about 33 minutes) vs 1 GB on S3 IS, optical zoom & stabilizer usable while recording, movie snap takes a full resolution shot while recording (with a short pause)
  • Takes SD/SDHC cards
  • Uses 4 AA batteries
  • Available in July for $500


Canon PowerShot SD850 IS

  • 8 effective megapixels
  • 35 - 140 mm (f2.8 - f5.5) 4X zoom lens
  • Optical image stabilization
  • Creative Light Effect mode changes background lights into shapes such as stars, music notes, hearts, etc
  • DIGIC III processor
  • 2.5 inch PureColor LCD
  • No manual controls
  • 30 FPS VGA movie mode with sound
  • Takes SD/SDHC cards
  • Uses a lithium-ion battery
  • Available in June for $400
