Nikon D40x

Nope, this isn't a replacement to the still very-recent D40 - the D40x brings in 10 megapixels for those who want more resolution in their basic digital SLR. Again, the D40 is not being replaced; this only means Nikon has two entry-level digital SLRs for you to choose from.

Nikon D40x

  • 10.2 effective megapixels (CCD sensor)
  • Nikon lens mount (1.5x crop factor); no built-in motor so only AF-S/AF-I lenses can be used for autofocus
  • 2.5 inch high-resolution LCD; no status panel
  • ISO sensitivity from ISO 100 to ISO 1600 (ISO 3200 with expansion); D40 was ISO 200 to ISO 1600 with expansion
  • Full manual controls plus scene modes
  • Shoots at 3.0 FPS up to unlimited JPEG or 6 RAW/RAW+JPEG (D40 had 2.5 FPS)
  • 3 point AF
  • Assist Images and Retouch features
  • Takes SD/SDHC cards
  • Uses a lithium-ion battery
  • Available in April for $730 (body only) or $800 (with the 18 - 55 mm kit lens)

Nikon also released a new lens today - which is the AF-S 55 - 200 mm f4.0 - f5.6 VR with optical image stabilization.
