DPInterface is alive and well

I am truly sorry about the downtime of the site for the last 48+ hours. In case you didn’t hear about it, we had a huge traffic spike last Saturday and our (silly) host decided to pull the plug on DPInterface. You can read about everything here: dpinterface.wordpress.com, and I’ll post a full length explanation/rant once I get the site’s contents to safety.

We’re still on our old host (ugh, LunarPages) so if something screws up again (knock on wood), you’ll know 1) who to blame and 2) that we didn’t just die off like that. I was planning to post my review of the Canon PowerShot SX200 IS today, but looks like that review will have to be delayed as I back up the site. I apologize again for the inconvenience caused.

Meanwhile, note down our emergency ‘locations’ where you can check for site updates and camera news in case something like this happens again (knock on wood, again):

  • Emergency blogsite: http://dpinterface.wordpress.com
  • Twitter http://twitter.com/dpinterface
  • Alternate email dpinterface [at] gmail [dot] com

NEW: Comparative reviews

Thanks to the 3000+ readers who took our little survey last week, we got down to writing our first ever Camera comparative review and have just published it today! Our comparative reviews, not to be confused with Group reviews, will be an extension to our usual reviews; which means full reviews are NOT going anywhere. Let’s say I had to review a bunch of ultra-zoom cameras:

  • A group review would be a single review article, attempting to review all three cameras at the same time. So it’s essentially a “Canon SX10 + Nikon P90 + Olympus SP590″ review.
  • A comparative review will be a concise and straightforward comparison between the three cameras “Canon SX10 vs. Nikon P90 vs. Olympus SP590″. The difference here is that each camera will be independently reviewed beforehand, so you’ll still get a full Canon SX10 review, full Nikon P90 review and full Olympus SP590 review (three full reviews) before the comparative review comes out.

Group reviews compromise the quality of reviews, in my opinion, while comparison reviews would add-on to existing reviews to summarize the differences between several similar cameras and help determine the best of the bunch. Again, full reviews will still be published to give cameras individual attention before a comparative review comes out. Yet another reason why DPInterface stands out from the crowd.

Check out the Rugged camera comparative review and tell us what you think! What other improvements should we tack on to future reviews?

Panasonic Lumix GF1 leaked; features fingerprint reader?!

panasonic gf1 fingerprint reader

Click on the image for a larger view (and sorry, the camera pic had to be interpolated)

Well, I’m not really a big fan of covering leaks and stuff, but when I noticed much of the internet community talking about the Panasonic GF1 (which was leaked this evening) and the ‘mysterious port/slot/piece/button thingy’ below the hot shoe, I thought I’d chime in to help solve the puzzle. It’s not a slot, it’s not a button, IT’S A FINGERPRINT READER!

The instant I saw the rendered pictures of the camera, I just knew what it was – I simply looked down to the palmrest of my notebook and boom, the exact same thing! *Of course, it could just be an electronic connector for an electronic viewfinder or external microphone or to plug in that popcorn machine you saw at Walmart. Happy speculating! (I have no idea what’s with the many cameras being leaked this summer, it’s almost as if it has become a new norm; how disturbing)

Update: For our readers’ sake, here’s what’s already known about the camera (you can also find this info elsewhere on the net)

  • It’ll be called the Panasonic Lumix GF1
  • It’s a Micro Four Thirds camera
  • There is an on-board flash, as well as a hotshoe for an external one
  • 720p HD movie mode with mono sound; there’s a dedicated movie button on the top of the camera
  • Two new lenses (20 mm and 45 mm primes) will be announced with the camera

Update 2: This is a speculation post. All the full juicy details available will have to wait until the camera becomes official on September 2nd!

Full steam ahead

Hey all, thanks for being loyal readers of DPInterface. I apologize for the delay of the Nikon Coolpix L100 review this week… the site has been undergoing some upgrades under the hood. But now, we’re back in gear – look out for the Nikon Coolpix L100 review first thing tomorrow morning. There are gonna be a lot of reviews over the next couple of weeks this summer, too many to list in fact. Some more interesting cameras I have here include the Nikon D5000 and Olympus E-P1. Enjoy the many weeks of summer as well as various camera reviews ahead of us!

DPInterface 4th anniversary!

Hey everyone, today is our anniversary! We may not have been around since the start of the digital camera era, but we started at the right time, when digital cameras started to evolve quite a bit from ‘just taking pictures’ (when things like digital SLR live view and manufacturers began making bridge cameras again). Four years and 130 camera reviews later, here we are now. DPInterface is still going strong and we’re constantly working on improving our site and reviews… A big thanks to all our readers and we hope you’ll stay for the many years to come!

P.S. Lots of interesting things happening next week – more reviews and a new camera announcement (in case you haven’t been keeping up with the rumors)!

Lots to come, LOTS

With PMA and the steady stream of new camera announcements from January to March over, things are about to become busy – summer is coming, school semesters are finishing, everyone’s getting busy, going on vacations, shopping (well, maybe less so because of the current economy…). But rest assured there will be reviews of your favorite, most sought after digital cameras here on DPInterface!

To those who wrote in to me or left comments on the site, you’ve been heard. I’ll try my best in getting out reviews of digital cameras which are popular among our readers; and of course, those requested by readers. Hey, it’s not too late to “ask for a camera review”, leave a comment here! Again, I’ll try my best – I can’t make guarantees because I’ve got a lot of cameras lined up here at the moment.

And in case you’ve missed them, here are some of the latest reviews DPInterface has published recently:

Check them out! Thank you all, for being readers of DPInterface and also for your patience.
