canon-g11

With a “few” hours left till the official Canon announcement, a picture of the PowerShot G11 has just leaked out! Note the detail of the new camera (especially the swiveling LCD) and the new button design on the upper left corner on the back - this surely ain’t a fake picture!

Here’s a picture of last year’s G10 for comparison’s sake.

So here’s the new PowerShot G11 is a prosumer camera… Canon seems to be backing out of the megapixel race with this camera since they probably know photo enthusiasts aren’t easily fooled by insane, ever-increasing megapixel counts (usually accompanied by an increase in noise, decrease in burst speed and little to no ‘real’ resolution advantage). Canon has opted to fit the new G11 with a 10 megapixel sensor (versus 2008’s G10 14.7 megapixel CCD), which will hopefully produce better images.

Update (almost forgot to include this; thanks for asking, Lloyd): The Canon PowerShot G11 will sport a 1/1.7 inch sensor.

Any word on stablized HD video?

  5. Brad (DPInterface) August 19, 2009 Reply

Yes, optical image stabilization can be used while recording video. Unfortunately, video is just VGA… no HD on the PowerShot G11 =(

Two Stops faster. So where does that place the ISO performance? (Hey I have a g10, I should know)

Please bring back intervalometer function of g9 too. It is only a few lines of code.

How about GPS? Is Canon even working on this at all?

The news is ISO performance of the new Canon PowerShot G11 will be about two stops better than the G10.
And no word on the intervalometer feature yet…

The Canon PowerShot G11 doesn't have built-in GPS. So far, Canon hasn't come out with any GPS system or attachments for their PowerShot cameras yet.

That front view you have of the G11 looks exactly like the one of the G10 you have below, with just the 'G10' erased and a 'G11' inserted. Look closely! There is always a much more noticeable change in form factor and appearance than this. Hoax!

Where were you during the last 36 hours or so? There's no more 'is it real?' guessing - The Canon PowerShot G11 is already official!

The Canon PowerShot G11 is an incremental upgrade to the PowerShot G10 so you may not notice a huge difference between the two on the front. The back of the camera is where most of the differences lie (ie rotating LCD)

But have Canon improved the accuracy of the optical viewfinder?

    • DPInterface August 27, 2009 Reply

I don't believe so. The G11 doesn't change much from the G10 (in terms of feature set) and appears to share the same optical viewfinder as the G10.

How very unfortunate, if so. My G10 viewfinder not only covers a significantly larger area than indicated, it is also innacurate. Not useful if this new version is to appeal to serious amateurs. Fancy rear screens are fine, but there are situations where a direct viewfinder is a 'must'.

We’ll certainly be going back for seconds, but at first blush Canon’s new PowerShot G11 is quite the attractive piece. The real standout, of course, is that flip-out LCD — which feels bolted on by the gods — but really the whole camera’s build quality (and corresponding weight) is immediately obvious. We found the LCD plenty bright and colorful, though it certainly feels small for a modern camera. The price isn’t small, but hopefully the RAW, 10 megapixel results will speak for themselves.
